Common Action Forum: “Sovereignty and Fair Interdependence: The Global South and the Democratisation of Prosperity”

International Affordable Diagnostics and Therapeutics team members were delighted to participate in Common Action Forum 2024 which was co-organised by Khazanah Research Institute (KRI) and Third World Network (TWN) with the theme of Sovereignty and Fair Interdependence: The Global South and the Democratisation of Prosperity in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia on the 2-3 December 2024. The forum was convened to discuss the role of the Global South in shaping an equitable international order in a time of turmoil and overlapping crises.
The event was attended by the Prime Minister of Malaysia, Dato’ Seri Anwar Ibrahim. During his keynote address, the prime minister urged that Malaysia must strategise regional and internationally to address the shared concerns of the Global South. He highlighted the need to reform international financial infrastructures, trading systems and the climate finance system. He also outlined the critical role the Global South can play as a key architect of an equitable international order, being home to the majority of the world’s population, a source of great resilience, dynamism and innovation.
Malaysia’s Minister of Health, Datuk Seri Dr Hj Dzulkefly Ahmed, delivered a keynote address on ‘Fixing Global Inequality through Climate and Health Justice’ with a focus on the role of technological innovation for the Global South. Other panellists included Professor Sanjeev Krishna, Professor of Medicine and Molecular Parasitology at City-St George’s, University of London (CSGUL), Vicente Paolo Yu, Senior Legal Adviser at the TWN and Ellen ‘t Hoen, director of Medicines Law & Policy (ML&P).
Professor Krishna also co-chaired a workshop on Day 2 on Strengthening Public Health Security, along with Professor Aishah Taib, Consultant Breast Surgeon at Universiti Malaya. The workshop brought together key stakeholders from the civil service, academics, policymakers and civil society.
